Sling Bling!

So another friend of mine calls me up today to ask about Sling Box.

Now for those of you who don't' know what a Sling Box is, it is "location free TV", that's just nerd talk for "watch your home TV anywhere with a computer and Internet connection".

It's actually very cool, and to no surprise of anyone out there, I do have one. Although, I have the original version that came out and they do have 3 new versions out right now.

Basically you can attach the Sling Box to anything that has a video output and watch that source anywhere in the world on your computer as long as you have an Internet connection.

That includes TV, DVD, VCR, Tivos, cable boxes, and other DVRs.

I like my Sling Box it enables me to watch my TV from anywhere even my Tivoed shows! Yes you can control your Tivo over the Sling Box and pause, play, rewind and fast forward. PLUS I'm really looking forward to the iPhone Sling Box player that way I can watch TV on my iPhone anywhere I go! Sweet!!

If you're thinking about getting one you'll need to consider these things:

  • How fast is your Internet connection? - The quality of the video will depend on this

  • Where is your video source located vs your Internet? - This will determine if you want to run a long cable, get a wireless bridge from the Sling Box to the Internet.

  • What are you hooking up to the Sling Box? - If it's some sort of "box" you'll have to use IR blasters which will enable the Sling Box to control that box such as change channels, FF, RW etc. Also the Sling Box will dominate that box meaning that whatever your watching over the Sling, anyone who's there in person will be forced to watch the same thing, if you change the channel there or on your Sling that's what both people will see

  • The Sling Box A/V, and Solo only support one user. The Pro supports multiple users, with up to three standard video sources and one HD source.
