Your printer is a spy against you!

This is actually kinda old news but only very few people actually know about this. But you being of the 5 people who actually reads my blog will now know the secret.

So did you know that just about every printer, particularly laser printers, print a special code or finger print not visible to the naked eye, on each piece of paper it prints. That fingerprint is detected by closely analyzing the bands a printer leaves behind. It's a combination of using image-analysis tools and pattern recognition. The printer's "signature" is then digitally loaded into a database. This database could be used by forensic examiners, law-enforcement agencies, and government officials to spot forged documents.

So basically everything you print could potentially be linked back to you, so next time you want to print your manifesto about world domination or how you're gonna commit some kind of crime just be weary of printing your master plan ; )

More iTunes Awesomeness

So we all love music and most of us have iPods and we use iTunes. We also all burn music in iTunes to take on the go in the car or stereo or to bring to a friends house. But who wants a CD with no titles of songs and what tracks are on it. It's like a miscellaneous grab bag and you never know what is going to be on there.

As a veteran of burning CDs I know that my friends like to see the song titel and artist. So guess what iTunes, does this for you automatically! It's so easy a new PwC associate can do it. So this is how you do it. Select the play list you want to print the track listing for, then Go to File/Print. From here you can print a CD jewel case insert, Song listing or Album listing. But the cool part is to use the "Theme" drop down to pick more options. My personal favorite is the "Mosaic" theme, it uses the album art in your library to print a Mosaic for the CD cover and on the inside it does a list of song and artist. Of course this is dependte on your iTunes library being ORGANIZED, with the correct album art and song name and artist. If you're having trouble with this see my other post called "I hate iTunes...that's because you're an idiot" This will help you get your music organized.
It's really slick and you can impress your friends and tell them you spent a lot of time designing that cover just for them.

Give it a try next time you make a Audio CD or an MP3 CD.

Mac Printer Sharing

So a friend of mine emails me and askes me how to share printers within Mac well here is the solution I was able to find:

On the OSX Machine go to System Preferences then Sharing. Simply click on Printer Sharing and exit out of the screen.

In Windows go to Start -> Control Panel (or All Programs, then Control Panel.) Click on Printers and Faxes, then “Add a Printer”. Choose Next then “A Network Printer,” next again and make sure Browse for a Printer is checked.

A list of computers with shared resources will come up.

Double Click on the one that is your OSX box and hit next yet again. The OS X name may be something like MAC00123456, this is the EtherNet card’s unique Mac address.

A list of available printers should come up, highlight the one you want to install and hit next again.

The next step is a bit complicated, when you see a message saying that the printer drive will install automatically and it could be a security risk, go ahead and say Yes to the message. The next message may says “The server for the printer does not have the correct printer driver installed.” Click Ok, as this is why the printer driver was already installed. If the printer driver isn’t on the list, then browse to the printer driver that you installed earlier.

Hit OK, perhaps do a test page just to be safe, and enjoy printing!

New Macbook & Macbook Pros?

Ok so the rumor is that Apple is working on the new Macbook and Macbook Pros. They are suppoed to be thinner and have more of a Macbook Air look.

Also a key thing to note is that Apple is looking to change the chipset that is used on the main board. Not the processor, Apple will still use Intel Processors, but they are looking at the other components, such as the integrated graphics chip set. The current integrated Intel graphics has been average at best and Apple is looking for more performance in the Macbook.

Also the big news is that the new Macbook and Macbook Pro will have a glass touch screen for multi touch goodness, like the iPhone and iPod Touch. Best of all thees are supped to be due out in September just in time for back to school and holiday season.

So if you were thinking about getting a new computer hold off until about September.

Tivo and Direct TV Satelite Box Love

A friend of mine texts me today and asks how do I set up my Direct TV box with my single tuner series 2 Tivo. Well the easiest way to do this is just to get a Direct Tivo box just two cables and you're done. But if you don't want to do this because you have an existing Tivo box I've got an answer for you too.

Well good news is that this is possible bad news is that it's going to require a few more additional steps in order to accomplish this. Here is a step by step guide.

- First turn off/unplug both devices and place the satellite box on top of the Tivo

- Connect the Coax cable from the wall to your Direct TV box

- From the Direct TV box grab your RCA cables (the white, red & yellow cable) and connect one end from the Direct TV "out" to the Tivo RCA "in" with the corresponding colors

- From here you have a choice, you can connect another Coax cable from the Tivo to the TV's Coax in, or you can connect the Tivo RCA "out" to to your TV's RCA "in" the only difference is if you're using Coax you'll have to tune your TV to channel 3 or 4, with RCA you'll have to click the video input on your TV to get the correct input.

- Next you'll have to figure out if your Direct TV box has a "serial" port in the back, this port looks like a computer monitor port. If it does try connecting the serial port cable that came with your Tivo from the DTV box to to your Tivo box. The serial cable looks like a computer monitor cable on one end and a headphone jack on the other. You have to do this so that the Tivo can control your satellite box, otherwise Tivo won't be able to switch channels.

-If your DTV box doesn't have a serial port or if the serial port doesn't work you'll have to use the "IR Blasters", the IR blasters look like a cable with two plastic hooks with tiny light bulbs on the end of each hook. You plug the end that looks like a headphone jack into the back of the Tivo and place the hooks on the top and bottom of the satellite box making sure that the hooks are pointing at the IR sensor of the DTV box. This will enable the Tivo box to send a channel command to the DTV box to change the channels for recordings.

- For the official Tivo guide and pictures to help you set up see this link:

- Now turn on both devices

- On the Tivo main menu go to: Channel Changing screen on your DVR. From TiVo Central, select Messages & Settings; then Settings; then Channels; then Channel Changing.

- Follow the guided set up depending on weather or not you're using serial cables or IR blasters.

- For the Tivo guide on how to set up channel changing go here:

No I haven't been ignoring the Blog for all 5 of you readers out there. It's just that nothing exciting has popped up that any non-super tech dork would care about.

Like there are new price drops on Intel chips

Rumors about new Macbooks and Macbook Pros and maybe a Macbook touch.

Oh, SSD drives are getting cheaper and should become more mainstream later this year

ummmmmm, that's about the most exciting news I've encountered. Nothings all that intriguing or will help you with anything.

So stay tuned, I'm sure something will pop up soon.

You have an iQuestion...

So a buddy of mine texts me over the weekend asking me what the deal is if you have an existing iPhone. Well here's the scoop:

-If you have an existing iPhone you can upgrade to the new one from $199/$299 guaranteed

-If you do upgrade you can use your old iPhone as an iPod touch

-You can sell your original iPhone or give it to a friend to use and they can sign up for service under the "old" iPhone service plans which are cheaper ***IMPORTANT, make sure if you are selling/giving your iPhone away, you at least restore it first to get rid of your personal information, if you've upgraded your iPhone to ver 2.0 there is a specific button that will perform this erase for you it'll take about 30 min.

-If you "Jailbreak" your original iPhone, it will actually sell for hundreds more than a locked original iPhone

-You can actually swap sim cards and use both phones if you want in case you want to have one for work and one for personal

- You can sync two iPhones on the same computer and as long as you configure iTunes to pull the same data to both phones I'll do so, also remember both iPhones must be synced on the same computer

What's "jail breaking"? Erasing personal data? Have questions like that email me: richmlee@gmail.com

iPhone 3G - Week One

Ok so I've officially had the iPhone 3G for one week now. So I'm going to give my report card on this thing.

Positives:

-The 3G network is awesome, the speeds are really fast when you do have 3G and is well worth the extra $10 for the data.

-GPS and location features are awesome, finding points of interest near you with out having to input a point of reference is awesome.

-App store is amazing I've found so many sweet applications out there and it'll just continue to grow. Although you don't need the iPhone 3G to get the app store you just need software update version 2.0 and your first gen iPhone can have the same app store sweetness!

-Despite the new plastic back, it still has a very solid fee and still very scratch resistant. I've been case free for a week and no nasty scratches.

-Still same old iPhone that I loved before with a few new extras

The Bad:

-The new back up process is extremely long like 10 min to back up your phone to iTunes, before ver 2.0 it took seconds now it takes forever....hopefully the new 2.0.1 firmware version will fix this.

-Battery life is not as good as the original, it's decent but if you're pounding away using 3G, the GPS, bluetooth, iPod etc, it will drain the batter really fast. But you'll still get about on day's use out of it and you'll have to charge it when you get home. I'd recommend getting a car charger.

-I find that the new iPhone isn't as responsive as the old one, sometimes there is a half a second lag when you're sliding/tapping things. This is probably mainly due to the new software so again I hope the 2.0.1 update will fix this.

-Typing lag! On my old iPhone I used to be able to type with a quickness, but the new iPhone sometimes has a lag! This is lame, again this is probably a software issue that can be fixed.

-Also semi-lame is the fact that the auto switching of the EDGE/3G to your home WiFi isn't as quick anymore. Sometimes I have to wait a couple min before it'll switch to my WiFi network at home.

So there you have it a full weeks worth of use and despite the few things I've mentioned above I still really like the phone, if they can fix a few of the things above, it make this phone even better.

So is the upgrade worth it? Well yes and no, if you don't care about the 3G speed and GPS then don't upgrade, you're better off just sticking with your original iPhone and upgrading to firmware 2.0 you'll get the the apps store this way and it's free.

But if you're tired of the dial up Internet on the first iPhone you'll want to get the 3G version the speed is dramatically faster and the GPS is actually very useful for location based services.

But even if you did upgrade I don't think you'll be disappointed.

ATT does not love iPhone yet...

So earlier, I said that all iPhone users will get free WiFi from ATT but now ATT is saying just kidding!! We didn't mean to post anything like that on our website.

So for now no free WiFi for iPhone users. Supposedly this service is coming tho, just no one knows when, Freaking ATT and their bait and switch....

iPhone ='s free ATT WiFi Hot Spot Access

Well being an iPhone owner just gets better and better. ATT has announced that all iPhone owners will have FREE access to all of their 17,000 WiFi Hot Spots! This includes, Starbucks, Airports, book stores, schools, restaurants, etc. So anywhere you find an ATT hot spot just whip out your iPhone and you'll be able to access it for free.

This is particular useful because the only way to access the iTunes store is to access it thru WiFi, ATT and Apple do not allow over the air access and downloads from iTunes. So next time you're dying to buy that Rick Astley track on the go, now you can. Or if you're in an area that doesn't have 3G and you're trying to do things with the painfully slow EDGE network, just find an ATT WiFi hot spot.

Now I'm not sure why they aren't making this feature more known to everyone it's an awesome feature. But thanks to your old buddy Dick I've found the 411 on this see the link:

The link above also has a WiFi hotspot finder to find the closest one near you. I'm sure someone in the future will create an app using the GPS to find your location and then pinpoint the closest ATT WiFi hot spot, man I should be an iPhone developer, except my job kinda gets in the way of that.

Mobile Me **Review UPDATE** Back to my Mac

On thing I forgot to mention in my review that Mobile Me offers is a feature called "Back to my Mac".

Basically this feature enables you to access your Mac at home remotely. This requires a Mobile Me subscription and two Macs with Leopard OSX installed.

It's actually really cool basically after setting up both Macs, it'll automatically show up in your "Devices" panel in the Mac finder, from there you can click on it and browse what's in there and to grab that file simply drag and drop it your desktop.

Also what you can do is "share my screen", what this does is that you'll be able to see your Mac's screen remotely and control and use all the programs from you Mac remotely. You can launch apps, send email and do everything as if you were sitting in front of your other Mac.

Very cool feature if you have two Macs both running Leopard OSX. This makes it extremely easy to set this up.

I've done this in Windows but it reacquires some pretty technical setup requirements such as going into your router and opening up the RDC port, finding your external IP address and setting up both Windows computers to allow communications with each other. Plus your home Internet does not come with a static external IP it's dynamic meaning that every month or so your ISP will change your external IP, if that happens you won't be able to RDC to your Windows machine at home.

But with Back to my Mac and Mobile me they handle all of this for you so you don't have to worry about anything.

Although it request 2 Mac running Leopard OSX and a Mobile Me subscription this can be an extremely useful feature.

Mobile Me **Review**

So a buddy of mine IM's me today and asks me about Mobile Me. If you haven't heard about Mobile Me it's Apple's on-line service for email, contacts, calendars, pictures, and storage. It's actually the revamped version of .Mac.

Of course I bought it the day it came out along with the iPhone because of one key feature that it has is, "push" email, contacts and calendars. Apple touts it as "Exchange" for the rest of us. I'll go down each feature and give you what I think and what really matters to me and you, namely does it work and is it easy to use.

Well I'll be honest with everyone, the first day I got it I registered it and I was a bit disappointed because everything was buggy and slow. However, this was because the .Me servers were being pounded by everyone else registering and syncing their information. So I've let it settle a bit and now it appears to work fairly well. Also unless specified otherwise this will work with your iPod touch assuming it's hooked up to a WiFi network.

Mail: So one thing Mobile Me doesn't make very clear is that push mail is only available on your @me.com mail. You can't have your gmail accounts "pushed" by Mobile me. This was a bit of a bummer but I found a way around it. What I do is have all my Gmail forward to my .me account that way mail is pushed to the .me servers and then pushed to my iPhone, when I reply, I reply using the Gmail out going servers so when people get my emails they see it come from richmlee@gmail.com. I've been using this work around for about a week now and it works out great. The only problem is that on my iPhone you have to have your gmail account active too so I'll get my gmail pushed to me via my .me account and then 15 min later I get a pull into my gmail in box too so I get the same email twice. The reason I have to have the gmail account active is because I need to have the gmail out going server on. Not a huge deal but so far it's the only the draw backs to my work around. One other note, "push" is only from the .me server and to the iPhone, mail isn't "pushed" to your PC/Mac, your PC/Mac will be set up to "fetch" mail from .me or gmail. .Me can't push email to your PC/Mac.
Contacts: So far the .me push contacts works great. Anytime you make a change/add/delete a contact from the .me site it automatically pushes it to your iPhone and you'll see the change almost instantly. I tested this and was pretty impressed at the speed of the updates. This is also true the other way around. When you make a change/add/delete a contact from your iPhone your phone will push it to the .me server and you'll see the change. However there is no "push" to your PC/Mac, your PC/Mac will again be set up to "fetch" these changes. But all your changes will be synced up even without you physically connecting your iPhone to sync to your PC/Mac.

Calendar: The calendar in .me works the same way that contacts do, changes/add/deletes of your calendar made from the .me website are pushed to your iPhone and vice verse. The online calendar is very clean and easy to use, it's similar to Google calendar. You can also manage multiple calendars as well such as a work calendar, personal calendar, and adding any other calendar, and they are color coded so you know on any give day, week, and month at a glace what you have that is personal and work related. I tested changes/adds/deletes from .me to my iPhone and vice verse and it worked really well. Again no push to your PC/Mac, it'll have to fetch.

Gallery: I like this feature, it's a great way to share photos with family and friends. The interface is very clean and obviously "Apple" slick. You can browse and view photos in a variety of ways instead of just the thumb nail view a lot of other sides offer. The added feature with Gallery is that your friends can download and keep the full original quality of the photos. This is great because a lot of times when you upload photos they are automatically resided and you don't get to see or down load the picture it in full quality. Another cool feature is that your friends can add photos to the gallery all they do is click the upload button and they can upload the full size and quality photo directly to you for you to have. Another great feature of gallery is that it supports full RSS feeds that your Friends and family can subscribe to. So anytime you add or edit photos your friends and family will be notified and they can go download your latest photos. If you have a Mac sharing from iPhoto 08 is ridiculously easy, just pick the album you want to share check a few options and click publish. This would be a life safer if say you're having triplets and you're taking a three times the pictures of any other parents and trying to share them. Take pics with your iPhone and share them instantly as well on your mobile me gallery. It's an awesome way to share and organize your photos. Apple has posted a sample gallery here: http://gallery.me.com/emily_parker
So you can see how the functionally works. Check it out.

iDisk: Have you ever wanted to email big files only to have your email says that the file is too big or that some type of file is not allowed to be emailed on their servers? Well iDisk solves this problem. It's like having a portable hard dive on the Internet at all times where you can access it from any web browser. You can store all your important files you want to have instant access to anytime you're near a PC. You also have a public drive that everyone has access to to download and upload files. Even if you're storing files in your private folder sharing those files are easy. Just click the file you want to share and you can email that person with a link, you can even set a down load limit, an expiring date and other options, once done that person will receive an email and they'll just click download and they'll have the file. You can also "mount" iDisk on your Mac or PC and access them as a virtual drive from Finder (Mac) or Windows Explorer, just like you were browsing your local hard drive. It's a great way to share files. .Me also has pretty generous band with and storage size.

Pricing: An individual account costs $99 per year and gets 20 gigs of storage for email and iDisk. 10 gigs for email and 10 gigs for storage with a 1 gig file size upload limit and 200 gigs of bandwidth per month. A Family Pack subscription costs $149 per year and includes one Individual account with 20GB of combined email and file storage, plus four Family Member accounts, each with its own email address and 5GB of storage. Convert an Individual account to a Family Pack anytime you like — you just pay the difference.

Conclusion: You can use .Me either with a Mac or PC, that's right you're not required to have a Mac, however some of the features are much easier on a Mac but you can pretty much do the same things on a PC as well. .Me is fairly easy to use, it's now speedy, and offers a lot of great features. While that are some places that offer these same services for free, you're really getting a whole lot of features and Mac stability as well. It's a little on the pricey side, but for a limited time if you buy a new iPhone or new Mac you'll get $30 bucks off the price of either an individual account or family pack. But I think for the features and ease of use it's worth the price of admission.

Edit this!

So my buddy texts me last night and asks what a good program is to edit and chop up MP3's with. There are a lot of applications out there that will do this but one I recommend to everyone because 1. it's easy to use and 2. it costs FREE.99. Plus there are clients for Mac and PC.

Do a Google search for Audacity or just follow this link:

This app is really easy to use, you just highlight the areas you don't want and hit cut, you can stitch pieces together export back to MP3 etc. Also it has a line in recording feature that can record from any source you plug in (assuming your PC has a line in). Also what's really cool is that it will record streaming audio. You have to be there to press record and stop record but if you record too much at the beginning and end just chop it off with the cut feature.
I use it all the time it's an awesome free application! So get out there and edit those MP3's!

I hate iTunes...that's because you're an idiot

So lots of people out there don't like using iTunes, primarily because they just don't know how to use it. I have used just about every music management system out there and they all suck compared to iTunes. Real player, sucks; Windows Meda, sucks; WinAmp, sucks; Napster, sucks; Rhapsody, garbage; and the list goes on and on.

Nothing is as slick and easy to use as iTunes, however I won't go to say it's perfect it's just that everyone else out there sucks so bad it makes iTunes that much better.

So now that I've convinced you that iTunes is the best how do you keep it all organized? People have disorganized libraries, I mean how do you find the song you want when it's just called "Track 1" what the F does that mean? And how come there are 50 "Track 1's" in your library.

But those days are over there is a program out there called "TuneUp Companion" for iTunes, and it should solve a lot of people's disarranged iTunes problems. It'll fetch album art identify tracks the whole shebang!

One awesome feature is the Clean tool. It takes an audio fingerprint of a mislabeled song, matches it against the Gracenote's global Media Database which has something like 90 million songs and then it'll return the best match. Once that is done you can save this data into your iTunes library. It'll even recognizes songs from the same album so you can get both music and cover art contemporaneously. I wouldn't recommend highlighting your entire library and just let er' rip, you should do portions at a time otherwise you'll overwhelm your system and then it'll lock up and you'll sit there complaining about why iTunes sucks. So don't be an idiot.

This thing ain't perfect, but it's defiantly an easy way to get your somewhat organized. The development team are working on updates to improve the software.

Right now TuneUp Companion is Windows only with a Mac client available sometime in the fall. The trial version listed offers 500 "cleans" and 50 cover art "finds". An unlimited version of TuneUp Companion costs $19.95 for a one-time charge or you can get an annual subscription for $11.95.

So get out there and clean up your messy library.

Movie Rentals PS3

Not to steal the thunder of the Xbox 360 and NetFlix partnership, BUT Sony has announced that with the new Sony firmware update on the PS3, you'll be able to rent movies via the Sony Playstation Store.

So starting today Sony will start you'll be able to watch movies and TV shows from Sony, Apple's close partner Disney, as well as Fox, MGM, Paramount, and several other studios. Television shows can be viewed for 1.99 dollars per episode and film rental prices range from 2.99 to 5.99.

Additionally PlayStation 3 users can buy movies for download at prices from 9.99 to 14.99. Also as a bonus, downloaded video can be transferred to a Sony PSP for viewing on the go, similar to Apple TV's feature of taking movies on your iPod/iPhone.

So PS3er's you're not left out. We'll see which is better.

Got questions email me: richmlee@gmail.com

Xbox <3's NetFlix

Xbox and Netflix announced a partnership today where you will be able to use your NetFlix account to stream movies onto your Xbox and watch them on your TV.

Kind of an alternative to buying a Ruku (see previous post) box if you already have an Xbox 360. All it requires is an Xbox live account and the minimum $9 monthly NetFlix account, and you'll get all of the ulimited streams to your Xbox and TV. Depending on the speed of your connection you'll get close to DVD quality and with Xbox being HD capable in the future there is room for streaming HD movies.
One also other very cool feature, is that people with Xbox Live and Netflix accounts will also be able to share downloaded videos via the Internet to watch them together remotely. Now that's pretty cool.

This service will start this Fall so look out for those Xbox 360 updates.

iTorture

One question that people ask me a lot is about the iPhone's durability, or "should I get a case". Well on my original iPhone I never used a case because of the fact that it has an aluminum back and glass front. I would throw it in my pocket with my keys, or my gym bag or wherever and it never got bad scratches.

Also it defeats the purpose of the sleekness of the iphone if you're just going to wrap it up with some fat case or whatever. The only time my original iPhone developed a scratch on the screen is when I dropped my iPhone at the airport and this large woman who looked as if she didn't miss too many meals stepped on it. To my horror my screen was scratched but only at the bottom right so the main screen wasn't scratched. Then I actually dropped my iPhone twice on concrete and then on asphalt. It got a little dent in the side but it kept ticking so the iPhone itself is very resilient.

What's that you say that was so last year? Of course there's a new iPhone and the back is all plastic! Well so far with no case, I'm happy to report that my phone still has no scratches and the back is still glossy shinny black sans scratches. I'm probably going to just keep going sans iPhone case.

Still not convinced? PC World has posted a video of them torturing a poor iphone, from heavy scratching with a key, washing it, dropping it in milk, flinging it in the air and letting it drop. The phone took quite a beating but it kept ticking, the screen did eventually crack but that was after some repetitive dropping. But all in all the iPhone did well. Check out the video here:
http://www.pcworld.com/video/id,852-page,1-bid,0/video.html

So don't be a puss just go without a case, but if you really want some kind of protection I'd recommend you getting the invisible shield see here:
http://www.zagg.com/invisibleshield/apple-iphone-3g-cases-screen-protectors-covers-skins-shields.php

This stuff is virtually indestructible and it comes with a life time warranty. I would just recommend getting the back shield as the front of the phone is glass so unless you skip it across a side walk or a fat lady steps on it should be very scratch proof. I use this on all my iPods and it keeps them nice and scratch free and best of all it's a thin film that won't add unnecessary bulk to your iPod/iPhone.

What song is that?!...Shazam knows!!

Ok so by far one of the coolest FREE apps I've found is an app called Shazam. It's for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

So have you ever been in the car, watching TV, at a club, or in an elevator and thought, man what song is this, this is really good. Then you spend hours searching on Google with nothing but a few words to search for and usually you end up frustrated and end up quitting. Well with Shazam you can kiss that good bye. Basically with this app all you do is hold your iPhone near whatever song you are listening to, and it will record 12 seconds of it send it to the Shazam servers and SHAZAM!! It will send you back the name, artist and album.
During my tests I've been amazed at its accuracy it's been 100% right thus far. But not only does it tell you who sings the song and the name, but it gives you the option to but it on iTunes with just a touch of a button! AND it gives you links to videos on YouTube that you can watch of that particular artist. It's pretty Captain Insane-o.

I would definitely recommend this app to anyone out there who is a music fan or who has the eternal question, "What's the name of that song?!" It's a really slick application, but hurry it's only free for a limited time so go out there and get installing!!!

BB Thunder a.k.a. Blackberry Touch

So with all the hype over the iPhone recently I thought I might write about another very popular device. Yes, the Blackberry also known as the "Slave Line" or "PwC Manager Wireless Whip" or "Perpetual Work Device". Ok so I'm not the biggest fan of BB's but they do serve their purpose and I'm still proud to say that I've been working for 7 years and I never caved into getting a BB. In fact my boss the other day offered me one, and I kindly said "No thanks".

Well enough of that talk, what we're really here to talk about is the upcoming Blackberry Thunder! Yes the touch BB or the "wanna be iPhone". The guys over at http://www.crackberry.com/ have found some pics of the new device and it looks pretty interesting. Here are some of the main features (also see link http://crackberry.com/exclusive-first-live-pics-blackberry-thunder):

Tactile Response - when you press on the Thunder's screen, it pushes in "just" a little bit (the whole screen is sort of like a big button) and you get immediate "real" feedback - you hear an audible clickety sound, and can feel a buzz in your finger where you actually pressed on the display.
Full QWERTY and SureType entry - hold the phone in landscape mode and you can take advantage of a full-qwerty keypad. Use the phone in portrait mode and you can enter data on a SureType keyboard. You will be able to choose/change your screen/keyboard orientation at anytime.
Screen is made of glass and will feature multi-touch - the Thunder is said to be utilizing WebKit for it's browser engine (same as the iPhone), so hopefully that means a solid web browsing experience for the Thunder.

Sounds pretty cool will it be able to stop the unstoppable force known as the iPhone? Only time will tell. But I'll put $5 bucks that it's not as good as the iPhone ; )

iPhone 3G

So I managed to get an iPhone 3G today.  In case you wanted to know yes I stood in line.  How long you say?  Only 6 and a half hours so no big deal.

One important thing you should know, if you have any discounts on your service plan you need to call ATT and have them removed if you are going to buy an iPhone at an Apple Store, if not they will block you from purchasing an iPhone this happened to me after standing in line for 5 hours so I called ATT had them remove it and I was able to buy it.  If you plan on buying an iPhone 3G from an ATT store you don't have to worry about it.

But back to the important stuff well how is it?  Well So far in the 4 hours I've had it, it's been great.  I was able to test out the two newest features that the 3G iPhone has over the old iPhone which was the 3G speed and GPS.

The 3G speed is extremely fast, I mean at least 2x as fast and probably in a lot of cases about 5x as fast so I've been impressed with the speed so far.  I used to have a Samsung Blackjack which was a 3G phone and the iPhone pretty much kills the Blackjack.  So the extra $10 dollars in my opinion is worth it, the speeds are great.  PLUS you can now talk and browse at the same time.  On the old iPhone if you were talking it wouldn't let you access data because the EDGE network doesn't' support two way communications.  Only down side so far is that you need to live in a city with good 3G coverage.  Fortunately I live in Los Angeles and they have a pretty robust 3G network here.

Next up is the GPS feature.  The GPS feature is great as well.  Found my position very quickly and placed a blue beacon on my position, from here I can search any near by points of interest.  Combined with the 3G network the searches are vastly faster than the first gen iPhone.  So this GPS feature will be very handy.

The look and feel of the iPhone is good too.  It actually feels thinner than the first gen iPhone although technically it's thicker.  So far the plastic back gives the phone a stronger signal reception for both voice, data and WiFi.

The next big change are the Apps.  Although you don't need a new iPhone to take advantage of the apps, (you can just install the software update 2.0 on your current iPhone to get apps) I have been really looking forward to this and seeing how they installed and ran.  Installing apps is easy as two taps and it automatically places a new icon in the home screen of the iPhone and a little download indicator.  I installed the following free apps and played with them:

Facebook
MySpace
AOL AIM
Remote

Both the Facebook and MySpace apps work wonderfully, in fact I think the MySpace iPhone app is better than the MySpace website, it's very clean looking and Facebook esq.  The Facebook app is great too but one thing its missing from the Web app is the ability to browse your friends photo albums which I thought was a bit weird.  But all in all these apps are a must have if you are into social networking.

AIM is awesome finally a native IM client all you do is log in with your account and all your buddies appear just like your PC and navigating is as easy as using your iPhone.

By far the coolest app so far is Remote.  I blogged about this earlier and it is so cool.  In just a couple of minutes I was able to remotely control my Powerbook, iMac and Apple TV music libraries from any room in my house as long as I had a signal to my wireless network.  I could browse all my music, play lists everything!!  Then I just tapped on a song and my music started playing.  On your PC/Mac you can even control volume but not on the Apple TV.  It even streams the Album art to your iPhone once you start playing a song.  You can flip the album art over and pick more songs from that artist and it will instantly start playing that song.  It's amazing and the speed is really impressive.  The next time I have a house party this will be something incredible to show off.

So there you have it my first impressions of the iPhone.  So far so good.  was it worth the wait?  Yeah for me it was, but I don't think too many people will agree with me.  If you don't have an iPhone and are mulling it over, just get it you won't be disappointed, besides there is a 30 day return policy so try it and if you really think it sucks just take it back.

Stream NetFlix to your TV

I know that many of us take advantage of the mail in movie services like Netflix and Blockbuster. Personally I use Blockbuster because of the ability to exchange movies at a real store at anytime I want however, Netflix does have a cool service to combat the fact they lack true brick and mortar stores. Netflix allows you to stream movies to your PC instantly which most of us know that already. However there is a new device called a Roku box that lets you stream Netflix movies directly to your TV. This is very cool it's like having an entire Blockbuster store in your house and you can watch any move at any time assuming they have it ready to stream. With your Roku box, you can finally tap into (a portion of) the Netflix library without having to wait for physical discs to arrive. Best of all this little Roku box is only $99.99!!though unlimited access to online films still requires an $8.95 or higher monthly fee for the traditional service). Plus the Ruku box can even utilize a wireless signal to pull in streams, but you'll need a pretty fast wireless router to do so. For those of you who have Netflix you may want to check this thing out. Seems like a great way to enhance your ability to each movies on demand. For more info go to http://www.roku.com/

Kodak Moments on a Canon

Another question people ask me is what kind of digital camera should I get? Well the short answer is the Canon Power Shot series. I personally really like the SD850 IS. If you can still find the older SD800 IS get that one it's cheaper and has virtually the exact same features. Some of the cool features of the the SD800/850 is image stabilization to reduce blurry pictures, 8 mega pixels, face recognition, 4x optical zoom, and 30fps video mode.

Why do I like Canon? It's Canon optics, all Canon does is make cameras and optics and they have been doing so for decades. The superior Canon optics result in richness in the color of the pictures that the camera takes, they are very full and vibrant. It also does very well in low light and close up pictures with good detail. The build is very solid and compact, about the size of a deck of cards so it can be easily be put in a pock or purse. Do you and I really care about ISO 1600 and macros and manual settings? Probably not we'll leave that crap to the uber nerds who do crazy photo editing. But if you want a camera that you can just pick up and shoot with good quality in just about every shot Canon is your best bet. Everything else is just second best.

Do us all a favor and don't by any of the Sony digital cameras. I personally hate these cameras. They are over priced and the picture quality is mediocre at best. I know I used to have one and I've sworn them off. They look cool and are very slim, but they do suck at what they are supposed to be used for and that is taking pictures. Their pictures seemed very washed out with lots of glare, and low light picture taking? Forget it, their tiny flash is so poor that it can't even light up a bathroom. Sony will say well we have "Carl Zeis" optics, which is true but it's a watered down cheap version of the real thing they just bought the name so they can slap it on their cameras. And why do they even have to have Carl Zeis optics? Because they couldn't come up with a good one one their own so they had to buy it. Ask any professional photographer what kind of camera they use, and I can bet that 90% of them will say Canon or Nikon who the hell uses Sony? Sony Cameras are a sham and I'm calling shenanigans on every single one.

Related to digital cameras is mega pixels, now people think that well the more mega pixels the better the camera and pictures right? Wrong. What really matters are optics what kind of lenses and digital processing chips are inside the camera. If you have bad optics and bad digital processing then all a 15 mega pixel camera will do is show you how bad those flaws are. I'd much rather have high quality lenses and digital processors on a 2 MP camera than one that has 15 MP with bad lenses and bad digital processors. So don't fall for the MP trap. In general 2MP is great for 4x5's if you want to blow up pics to 8x11 then you'll need 3-5Mp anything bigger than that you'll need 5-10mp. But how often do we really plow up pictures bigger than a piece of paper? What? You say you share pictures on line? Oh well than a 10MP is even more worthless because all the websites compress and reduce the resolution of the pictures so you lose all of the extra MP anyway.

Sling Bling!

So another friend of mine calls me up today to ask about Sling Box.

Now for those of you who don't' know what a Sling Box is, it is "location free TV", that's just nerd talk for "watch your home TV anywhere with a computer and Internet connection".

It's actually very cool, and to no surprise of anyone out there, I do have one. Although, I have the original version that came out and they do have 3 new versions out right now.

Basically you can attach the Sling Box to anything that has a video output and watch that source anywhere in the world on your computer as long as you have an Internet connection.

That includes TV, DVD, VCR, Tivos, cable boxes, and other DVRs.

I like my Sling Box it enables me to watch my TV from anywhere even my Tivoed shows! Yes you can control your Tivo over the Sling Box and pause, play, rewind and fast forward. PLUS I'm really looking forward to the iPhone Sling Box player that way I can watch TV on my iPhone anywhere I go! Sweet!!

If you're thinking about getting one you'll need to consider these things:

  • How fast is your Internet connection? - The quality of the video will depend on this

  • Where is your video source located vs your Internet? - This will determine if you want to run a long cable, get a wireless bridge from the Sling Box to the Internet.

  • What are you hooking up to the Sling Box? - If it's some sort of "box" you'll have to use IR blasters which will enable the Sling Box to control that box such as change channels, FF, RW etc. Also the Sling Box will dominate that box meaning that whatever your watching over the Sling, anyone who's there in person will be forced to watch the same thing, if you change the channel there or on your Sling that's what both people will see

  • The Sling Box A/V, and Solo only support one user. The Pro supports multiple users, with up to three standard video sources and one HD source.

iPhone 3G who wants one?

So AT&T announced the details surrounding the iPhone 3G as far as prices and plans. Here are the key points:

  • 3G iPhone goes on sale at 8am July 11th.

  • Current iPhone customers who've purchased a phone before 7/11/08, customers who are eligible for an upgrade and NEW AT&T customers can upgrade for $199 (8 gig) and $299 (16 gig)

  • Existing customers who are not eligible for an upgrade can purchase an iPhone 3G for $399 for the 8GB model or $499 for the 16GB model. Both options require a new two-year service agreement.

  • A no-commitment version of the phone will be available for $599 and $699, but probably not available right at July 11.

  • Plans start at $69.99 for 450 min, unlimited data, 5000 N/W, visual voice mail, with rollover and go up from there

  • Text messages start at $5 for 200, $15 for 1500 and $20 for unlimited

  • **I'm assuming if you are a current AT&T customer you will just needed to add an iPhone data plan & text, this was the case last year that that's what I did

Most of us will opt for the $89.99 plan which is 950 min, unlimited N/W, unlimited data, visual voice mail, and rollover, and the 1500 text for $15 so that comes to a whopping $105/month.

So there you have it. Get more details at:
